How To Choose Interests for Facebook Ads Step-By-Step
Sep 09, 2021When it comes to Facebook Advertising, the world really is your Oyster. And there really are plenty of fish in this social media platform sea!
This is prime territory for people that don't have an established audience. You get instant access to a plethora of people from a variety of demographics.
And...fortunately for you, Facebook has the DL on all of them, including you!
All you need to do is turn up with your target audience defined and start searching.
Now, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Facebook has over 2.6 billion monthly active users. No matter what audience you’re looking for, you’ll without doubt find it on Facebook.
HOW DO I CHOOSE INTERESTS FOR FACEBOOK ADS?
How exactly do you choose interests for your Facebook Ads?
You're lucky I am feeling real generous. I spent a decent chunk of time creating the perfect Facebook Ads Core Audience Checklist. It's jam-packed with instructions on how to create your interest based targeting.
Now for those of you that don’t know what the Facebook Ads core audience tool is, let’s take a step back.
Core Audiences in the Facebook Ads Manager define your audience based on five lots of criteria: demographics, geography, interests, behaviours. and connections.
You would use this tool to find new, cold audiences (top of funnel) that don’t yet know you.
And please tell me where else you're going to get access to this type of data, and for free at that.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING I NEED TO DO?
Let’s zone in on interest-based targeting. The first thing you need to do when choosing interests for your Facebook Ads targeting is to understand the type of interests your audience is into.
Within the Facebook Ads Manager itself, you can search a range of interests including brands, businesses and other Facebook pages if they are popular enough eg. Marie Forleo, Mecca Cosmetica or Nike. The options are limitless.
These searchable keywords will find your audience based on interests they have in their profiles, pages, groups, and other things on Facebook they follow or are connected to.
NOT SURE WHO TO TARGET?
If you’re feeling completely lost about the types of interests your audience may be into, I list out all the options Facebook offers you in my FB Ads Core Audience Checklist.
I also include loads of questions that may trigger some interest ideas for you. For example:
- Who are your main competitors and who do your customers buy from now?
- What types of associations or groups might your audience belong to?
- Who is your audience most influenced by?
If you are unsure of the answers to any of these questions or others I provide in the checklist, why not ask your audience these exact questions on your social media?
Even better still, If your followers profiles are 'public', take a look to see who they already like or follow and note this down.
CORE AUDIENCE SELECTION TOOL
Once you have an interest or two, you can add them to the Facebook Ads Manager Core Audience selection tool under detailed targeting. It will then offer you other suggestions to draw on, even better right!
